Lo denominan la \u201cGran Disconformidad\u201d: una brecha de tiempo misteriosa y perdida en el registro de rocas del ca\u00f1\u00f3n que cubre cientos de millones de a\u00f1os. Ahora, un estudio que se publica en la revista Geology propone una explicaci\u00f3n plausible para este fen\u00f3meno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLos acantilados del Gran Ca\u00f1\u00f3n son como un libro de texto de historia de la Tierra\u201d, explica Barra Peak, autor principal del nuevo estudio y estudiante de posgrado en la Universidad de Colorado Boulder. \u201cSi escalas por las paredes rocosas del ca\u00f1\u00f3n puedes retroceder casi dos mil millones de a\u00f1os en el pasado del planeta. Pero a ese libro de texto tambi\u00e9n le faltan p\u00e1ginas: en algunas \u00e1reas, m\u00e1s de mil millones de a\u00f1os de rocas han desaparecido del Gran Ca\u00f1\u00f3n sin dejar rastro\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seg\u00fan el equipo de investigadores, una serie de fallas peque\u00f1as pero violentas podr\u00edan haber sacudido la regi\u00f3n durante la desintegraci\u00f3n de un antiguo supercontinente llamado Rodinia. El caos resultante destrozar\u00eda la tierra alrededor del ca\u00f1\u00f3n, provocando que las rocas y los sedimentos se vertieran al oc\u00e9ano. \u00abTenemos nuevos m\u00e9todos anal\u00edticos en nuestro laboratorio que nos permiten descifrar la historia en la ventana de tiempo que falta a trav\u00e9s de la Gran Disconformidad\u00bb, indica Rebecca Flowers, coautora del nuevo estudio y profesora de ciencias geol\u00f3gicas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/revistapotencialhumano.com.mx\/revistadigital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Misterio-resuelto_1-1024x538.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1974\" srcset=\"https:\/\/revistapotencialhumano.com.mx\/revistadigital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Misterio-resuelto_1-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/revistapotencialhumano.com.mx\/revistadigital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Misterio-resuelto_1-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/revistapotencialhumano.com.mx\/revistadigital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Misterio-resuelto_1-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/revistapotencialhumano.com.mx\/revistadigital\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Misterio-resuelto_1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Las l\u00edneas que forman la Gran Disconformidad se pueden ver a simple vista desde el r\u00edo, como explica Peak, quien realiz\u00f3 la pasada primavera un viaje de rafting a trav\u00e9s del Gran Ca\u00f1\u00f3n: \u201cEn la parte inferior, se puede ver muy claramente que hay rocas que se han juntado. Sus capas son verticales. Luego hay un l\u00edmite, y encima tienes estas hermosas capas horizontales que forman las colinas y picos que asocias con el Gran Ca\u00f1\u00f3n\u201d. La diferencia entre esos dos tipos de rocas es significativa. En la parte occidental del ca\u00f1\u00f3n hacia el lago Mead, la piedra del s\u00f3tano tiene entre 1.400 y 1.800 millones de a\u00f1os. Sin embargo, las rocas que se encuentran en la parte superior tienen solo 520 millones de a\u00f1os. Desde que esta anomal\u00eda geol\u00f3gica fuera descrita por primera vez hace m\u00e1s de un siglo, los cient\u00edficos han visto evidencia de per\u00edodos similares de tiempo perdido en sitios alrededor de Am\u00e9rica del Norte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para explorar la transici\u00f3n, Peak y sus colegas emplearon un m\u00e9todo llamado \u00abtermocronolog\u00eda\u00bb, que rastrea la historia del calor en la piedra. Peak explic\u00f3 que, cuando las formaciones geol\u00f3gicas se entierran a gran profundidad, la presi\u00f3n que se acumula sobre ellas puede hacer que se calienten. Ese calor, a su vez, deja un rastro en la qu\u00edmica de los minerales en esas formaciones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Con este enfoque, los investigadores realizaron un estudio de muestras de rocas recolectadas en todo el Gran Ca\u00f1\u00f3n. Descubrieron que la historia de esta caracter\u00edstica puede ser m\u00e1s complicada de lo que los cient\u00edficos han asumido. En particular, la mitad occidental del ca\u00f1\u00f3n y su parte oriental (la parte con la que los turistas est\u00e1n m\u00e1s familiarizados) pueden haber sufrido diferentes contorsiones geol\u00f3gicas a lo largo del tiempo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00abNo es un solo bloque con el mismo historial de temperatura\u201d, explican. Hace aproximadamente 700 millones de a\u00f1os, la roca del s\u00f3tano en el oeste habr\u00eda subido a la superficie. En la mitad oriental, sin embargo, esa misma piedra se encontraba sepultada bajo kil\u00f3metros de sedimento. La diferencia, probablemente, se debi\u00f3 a la ruptura de Rodinia, una masa terrestre gigantesca que comenz\u00f3 a separarse aproximadamente al mismo tiempo. Los resultados de los investigadores sugieren que pudo haberse desgarrado en las mitades este y oeste del Gran Ca\u00f1\u00f3n de diferentes maneras y en momentos ligeramente diferentes, produciendo la Gran Disconformidad en el proceso.
